Experimental Audio Tool

I messed around with layering static noise over this music box clip I had, chopping it up to make smaller sound clips, and also trying some audio feedback.

I had a lot of trouble finding an artists for this week, maybe I just wasn’t Googling the right terms. When I searched “Generative Music” the name Brian Eno popped up frequently. Brian Eno seemed to have coined the term “generative music” in the 90s while working with SSEYO Koan’s software for making music that’s ever-changing and never the same. He now works with Peter Chilvers to make generative music phone apps such as Bloom, Trope, Scape, Quarta. These apps focus more on ambient generative music using shapes, color, and position to create a unique piece of music.

What I find interesting about these apps is that they make the concept of procedural or generative music to a more general audience by making the creation part more visual and simplistic with drag and drop or selection menu interfaces. Also the visual elements that accompany the music really compliment the ambient and lofty music. There’s also a particular app called Quarta that’s particularly interesting because it’s a two player game that creates a unique song for each game played based on the arrangement of tiles the player puts down. The idea of generative music in games seems to be a relatively new concept with the most significant example being No Man’s Sky. Seeing how these different forms of art are being meshed together to create a completely unique experiences for each individual.
